How matching works
You don't search for a lawyer and lawyers don't search for you. Describe your problem once and our AI matches it to licensed providers in your state. Here's exactly how we decide who sees your request.
-
Step 1
You describe your problem
Our intake assistant asks a few questions and writes a clear summary. You review and approve it before anyone sees it. Your name and contact details are never included.
-
Step 2
We find who is eligible
- Attorneys must hold a license in the state you selected. For federal areas such as immigration, an attorney licensed in any US state is eligible.
- Non-attorney providers (licensed paraprofessionals, document preparers, DOJ-accredited representatives) are eligible only where your state allows them to do that kind of work, and only if you haven't asked for attorneys only.
- Providers must have an active profile and be currently accepting requests.
-
Step 3
The AI picks who we notify
From the eligible providers we notify up to ten, ordered by fit: an office in your state or city, a language you asked for, client reviews, how often their quotes lead to a hire, and how many requests they've recently received, so work is spread fairly.
Whether a provider pays FindLegal is never considered.
-
Step 4
We invite attorneys who aren't on FindLegal yet
To find you more options, we may email a redacted version of your request (practice area, city and state, and a short description with names, contact details, addresses, exact dates and other identifying details removed) to attorneys licensed in your state who haven't joined yet. They see your full summary only after they register.
-
Step 5
You choose
Once matched, you and the professionals can see each other's request and profile details and chat on FindLegal. They send you quotes; you compare them and decide who to hire. Your name and contact details are shared only with the provider you hire.
Advertising
Some of our emails include sections featuring providers on a paid plan. Those sections are clearly labeled as advertising and have no effect on matching. FindLegal does not endorse or vouch for any provider.
What we are not
FindLegal is not a law firm and not a lawyer referral service. We don't give legal advice, don't recommend a particular provider for your case, and don't take any share of legal fees.
